Professor Anthony Hedley's Departure
We regret that Professor Anthony Hedley, the Chair Professor of Community Medicine at the University of Hong Kong is leaving Hong Kong next month because of the city's poor air quality. Professor Hedley prefers us to reflect on the fact that his departure is just another indication that we should be doing more for everybody else. His farewell lecture, The Hedley Lecture, will be held on 28 April (see Upcoming Events for more information). [The Wall Street Journal report]
More Environmental Cources
More universities in Hong Kong are now offering programmes and courses on environmental studies. The City University of Hong Kong is offering a bachelor’s degree programme on Environmental Policy Studies. A new degree in Global and Environmental Studies by Hong Kong Institute of Education is also available. Last but not least, the Open University of Hong Kong offers degree programmes and cources on environmental leadership, environmental decision-making, environmental sustainability, cleaner technology and green production.

The Hedley Lecture

Civic Exchange and Clean Air Network are organizing a lecture on Public Health in a Changing World: An Extra-terrestrial Perspective featuring one of the Hong Kong’s foremost advocates for public health, Professor Anthony Hedley. This lecutre will focus on the importance of risk communication and the difficulties of translating the scientific evidence of harm into clear messages.

Civic Exchange's 13th Energy Forum: Why is Effective Action on Global Climate Change so Hard?

Press Conference: Medical Priority Dispatch System
9 April, 2010
Prior to the Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Security's discussion on the Outcome of Public Consultation on the the Proposed Induction of the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) on 13 April, Civic Exchange hosted a press briefing on 9 April on the importance of adopting MPDS as soon as possible in Hong Kong.
Mr. Cheung Tak Hai, Vice Chairman (External Affairs), and Mr. Charlie Yip, Vice hairman (Internal Affairs), of the Alliance for Patient’s Mutual Help Organizations, and Professor Timothy Rainer, Director of Accident & Emergency Medicine Academic Unit of the Prince of Wales Hospital’s Service Department of Emergency Medicine were present to show their support of the MPDS.

Press Conference: Hong Kong’s Role in Mending the Disclosure Gap

Sponsored by Civic Exchange and ADM Capital Foundation, The Asia Water Project (AWP) was launched on 31 March. The AWP China website is an information portal designed to provide business and investors with relevant information about China’s growing water crisis. A press conference was held on the same day with featured guest Mr. Ma Jun, Director of the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (Beijing) to discuss the trend of better environmental disclosure in China and its impact on companies, including the listed ones on the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited.

The Air We Breathe 2: Dialogue on Road Transportation
27-28 November, 2009
Organized by Civic Exchange and funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Dialogue on Road Transportation invited local and international transportation, urban planning and public health experts to address the Hong Kong public about air quality and emissions from road vehicles. It was supported by leading local public health and atmosphere research centres.
Over 140 participants attended this public conference. Participants came from various sectors, including: businesses, district councils, community groups, students, academics, and the general public.
